Ultrasound Bill to be Heard January 20th- Please Contact Your Legislators!
HB 1371: An abortion facility may not perform an abortion on a woman without first offering the woman an opportunity to receive and view at the abortion facility or another facility an active ultrasound of her fetus. The offer and opportunity to receive and view an ultrasound must occur at least twenty-four hours before the abortion is scheduled to be performed. The active ultrasound image must be of a quality consistent with standard medical practice in the community, contain the dimensions of the fetus, and accurately portray the presence of external members and internal organs, including the heartbeat, if present or viewable, of the fetus. The auscultation of the fetal heart tone must be of a quality consistent with standard medical practice in the community. The abortion facility shall document the woman's response to the offer, including the date and time of the offer and the woman's signature attesting to her informed decision. HB 1371 has been introduced- the Ultrasound bill- and will be heard by the House Human Services Committee on Tuesday, January 20th at 10:30am.
As you see in the bill's language, the abortion facility will be required to offer an ultrasound of high quality to the woman. They must share accurate information, and document their actions.
We believe this is a good bill and should become law as it has in about 20 other states. It not only provides the woman contemplating an abortion some necessary information about the medical procedure which is to take place, but brings into perspective the other individual in the procedure-the unborn baby. With modern medical technology the ultrasound images provide an amazing view of the unborn, and even the heart tone can be heard.
This is a good bill to aid in protecting the life of the unborn, but is also very beneficial to the mother-providing essential information. In cases where the mother contemplating sees the ultrasound image, the incidence of having an abortion is low.
Please support this bill by contacting your legislators, the governor, and also friends encouraging them to do likewise. Click here to find your legislators. Any and all are welcome and encouraged to attend the hearing on Tuesday-your attendance and support will be much appreciated.
