Fewer Americans Support Abortion
by Jennifer Mesko, editor of citizenlink.com
'We want justice and peace - for the unborn as well as the born.' According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, 46 percent of Americans say abortion should be legal in most or all cases, a drop from 54 percent in August. Among 18- to 29-year-olds, there was a 5-point drop in support for abortion. Kristan Hawkins, executive director of Students for Life of America, said she sees support for life among her post-Roe v. Wade generation. "It's that survivor mentality and also a mentality of justice," she said. "We want justice and peace - for the unborn as well as the born." Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, called the shift toward protecting life "compelling." "The largest numbers of converts to the pro-life cause have been self-identified independents and liberal to moderate Republicans - the very voters who decided last year's presidential election," she said. "If Republicans want to improve their electoral performance, standing on the side of life is one of the best decisions they can make." In August, 55 percent of independents supported abortion. In April, the number fell to 44 percent. Abortion support among moderate and liberal Republicans fell from 67 percent in August to 43 percent in the newest survey. The national survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press was conducted March 31-April 21 among 1,521 adults reached on landlines and cell phones. FOR MORE INFORMATION
