Miss California USA Keeps Her Crown After Standing Up for Her Beliefs on Marriage
Donald Trump, who co-owns the Miss USA pageant, decided today that Miss California USA Carrie Prejean can keep her crown. Prejean appeared by Trump's side as he made the announcement in New York. The scathing criticism targeting Prejean began three weeks ago at the Miss USA pageant, when she said she believed marriage should be between one man and one woman. Officials with the California pageant have publicly ridiculed her and all but called for her dethroning Monday. Trump defended Prejean and her "very, very honest answer" on marriage. "It's the same answer that the president of the United States gave," he said. "It's the same answer that many people gave. She gave an honorable answer; she gave an answer from her heart." Trump said he was very proud of Prejean. "It's been a very tough period for her," he said. "She's really taken a tremendous amount of abuse." In a special two-part radio broadcast that wraps up today, Dr. James Dobson talks with Prejean about her stand for marriage. The purpose of inviting Miss California to Focus on the Family was not to "debate the merits of beauty pageants, or the swimsuit competition or the profession of modeling," Dr. Dobson said. "We agree with those in the audience who oppose that kind of sensuality. "That's not our purpose here. I want everyone to know the behind-the-scenes story related to the answer Carrie gave." Prejean said today that she does not deserve to be punished for exercising her freedom of speech. "I am convinced now more than ever of the importance of standing up for your beliefs and convictions," she said. "For everyone out there listening, do not be silenced. Take this story of mine and apply it to your own life. "I hope I have inspired others to maintain compassion, civility, respect and tolerance while staying true to your convictions, and to never, ever compromise your beliefs ... regardless of the consequences." - Jennifer Mesko of citizenlink.com
